Johannesburg, South Africa CNN —For South Africans, normality is a sliding scale. In October, a heavily armed gang blocked off one of the busiest highways near Johannesburg as it blew up a cash-in-transit vehicle – a security van carrying cash. Cash-in-transit, or CIT, heists are one of the most dramatic illustrations of a crime wave that has shocked even the most hardened South Africans. His argument is not entirely factual: crime affects South Africans from all walks of life, not just those earning a comfortable living. The South African police minister, Bheki Cele, recently highlighted what he called the successes of the Crime Intelligence division in tackling organized crime and rooting out corruption within the ranks of the force.

The outcome of the case will likely determine whether tens of thousands of people win back the right to vote. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the ban violates the Constitution's prohibition against “cruel and unusual” punishment. But the full 17-member circuit court vacated that ruling weeks later and scheduled Tuesday's hearing. In a dissent to the August ruling, Jones cited a previous Supreme Court ruling regarding felons' disenfranchisement, saying it is up to legislatures to decide such matters. CNN —A Texas man is suing Macy’s and the parent company of Sunglass Hut after the two companies allegedly relied on error-prone facial recognition technology to falsely accuse him of armed robbery. “They were misled by Sunglass Hut and Macy’s and the reason why Murphy was jailed is because of the actions of these companies. In 2020, the American Civil Liberties Union challenged Detroit’s police department over what the group described as the first known wrongful arrest involving facial recognition. Facial recognition concernsFor years, civil liberties and privacy experts have warned of the risks of overly casual facial recognition use or an overreliance on the technology, and the possibility that algorithmic bias could lead to misidentification, racial discrimination or other unintended consequences. The FTC has similarly moved to restrict Instagram-parent Meta from using facial recognition technology, which Meta has challenged in court.

Five Black candidates are running for statewide office, from agriculture commissioner to secretary of state. A common complaint is about a purging of voter rolls that has caused problems for Black voters as recently as this year’s August primary. Many other states in recent years have taken steps to reinstate voting rights for former felons. Critics also said it was another way to make it harder for Black voters to elect candidates of their choice. That sentiment is especially strong on college campuses, a focal point of several of the Black candidates running for statewide office.

President Joe Biden's positions in recent weeks have put him at odds with some members of his party. That includes Rep. Maxwell Frost who says Biden broke his promise to young voters. Rep. Maxwell Frost, the first Gen-Z member of Congress, says he is "very disappointed" in Biden for approving the $8 billion ConocoPhillips Willow oil project in Alaska, one of the largest-ever drilling projects on federal land. In November, Frost praised Biden in an interview with CNN, saying: "He's been unafraid to put forth bold, transformational ideas and policies, and that's really what excites young voters." When contacted after the Willow project decision, which Bowman opposed, he said his thinking had not changed.
